Is an Ethical Sphynx Breeder?

At Corbin’s Cathouse, we believe ethical breeding is about far more than producing kittens. It is about protecting the health, temperament, and future of the Sphynx breed while ensuring every kitten has the best possible start in life

Spotting an Ethical Breeder

Proper Registration

Ethical breeders register their cats with recognized associations such as the The International Cat Association (TICA) and the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA).

Registration ensures breeders follow established breed standards and ethical guidelines designed to preserve the integrity and health of the breed

Health Comes First

Responsible breeders prioritize preventative veterinary care and health testing. Ethical practices include:

Regular veterinary examinations

Age-appropriate vaccinations

Microchipping for permanent identification

Feline disease screening (such as SNAP tests)

Maintaining detailed medical records

These steps help ensure kittens leave for their new homes healthy and well cared for

Early Spay and Neuter

Pet kittens should be spayed or neutered before leaving for their new homes.

This prevents accidental breeding and protects the integrity of the breed by ensuring only health-tested, carefully selected cats are used in breeding programs.

Screening for Heart Disease

One of the most important responsibilities of a Sphynx breeder is screening for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a heart condition seen in the breed.

Ethical breeders:

Perform yearly echocardiograms with a veterinary cardiologist

Carefully track pedigrees and lineage

Make breeding decisions based on health data

While screening cannot eliminate risk entirely, it is one of the most important tools we have to reduce it.

Avoiding Harmful Mutations

Ethical breeders do not intentionally produce mutation breeds such as:

Bambinos

Elfs

Dwelfs

Bambobs

These cats are not recognized by major registries like TICA and CFA and are typically produced by combining multiple genetic mutations. This practice prioritizes novelty and profit over long-term health and responsible breeding.

Careful Placement

Ethical breeders do not sell kittens to just anyone. Responsible placement includes:

A detailed application process

Contracts that protect both the kitten and the new family

Health guarantees

Lifetime breeder support

Our responsibility to our kittens does not end when they leave our home.

Preservation Breeding

Ethical Sphynx breeders focus on preservation breeding, meaning kittens are produced with the goal of improving and protecting the breed.

Breeding decisions are made with careful consideration of:

Health

Correct breed structure

Stable, affectionate temperament

Ethical breeding requires time, research, mentorship, and a lifelong commitment to the animals we produce. Our goal is simple: healthy, well-socialized Sphynx cats that bring joy to their families for many years.

How to spot a scam

Because Sphynx cats are in high demand, scammers often target people looking for kittens online. Knowing the warning signs can help protect you.

  •  Extremely cheap prices
Ethically bred Sphynx kittens require extensive health testing, veterinary care, and proper breeding practices. If the price seems far below typical breeder pricing, it is often a red flag
  • Suspicious page names
Scam pages often use names like “Sphynx kittens for sale” or “Sphynx kittens for adoption.” Reputable breeders usually operate under a registered cattery name and are transparent about who they are.
  •  Unusual payment methods
Be cautious if someone asks for payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, money orders, or other non-traceable methods.
  • Refusing visits or video calls
A legitimate breeder should be willing to let you see the kitten—either in person or through video calls. Scammers often claim pickup isn’t possible and insist on shipping after immediate payment.
  •  No documentation
Always ask to see veterinary records, pedigree paperwork, DNA testing, and heart screening results for the parents related to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Ethical breeders are proud to share their health testing and records.
